The solution is online - per’apps

As PR and marketing professionals come to grips with online communication through social networks and the like, more and more are identifying opportunities to use apps.

This goes beyond posting material on a website or blog.  We talk with a PR professional who is developing apps for her clients to add to the interactivity of her clients' relationships with their public.

PR consultant Stieve DeLance is this week’s guest.

Charity begins ONLINE

Among the many organisations around the world becoming increasingly engaged with stakeholders online, the not-for-profit sector, in particular charities, has been up the front leading the way.

Possibly motivated by the social and interactive nature of online communication, possibly even more motivated by the ultra-low budget required, charities are helping to shape how online communication is done.

Well my guest this week is from Australia's first ever charity.  Established in 1813, the Benevolent Society is involved in a wide range of charitable works and actively campaigns for social change in this country.

Joining us now to tell us how the Benevolent Society taps into Australia's social conscience online, is Public Affairs Manager Carolin Wenzel.

Everyone can sell

The fact is, what many people called "selling", is similar too (if not the same as) "consulting".  It turned out that 'selling' is a skill that practically everyone, already had, but never realised it.

John Butel has been working for decades with individuals and organisations to establish efficient sales mechanisms, add to the confidence and competence of the sales team and indeed those who are called upon to sell for their organisation, even if they don't regard it as such.

He's talking with Steve Cropper.

The CEO Lifecycle

Statistically-speaking, the average Chief Executive Officer lasts about 3 years leading any single organisation.  That's not a long time, especially for a CEO who has a clear mandate for changing an organisation.  There are a lot of pressures on the CEO of a publicly listed company - or really any organisation - from staff and senior colleagues, legislators, customers and of course, the board of directors.

During that average three year term, it turns out that there are five distinct stages a CEO goes through during their stewardship of the entity they lead.  Many CEOs, perhaps most CEOs, are unaware of this leadership lifecycle.

Steve Cropper is speaking with CEO King (and Queen)-maker, Rodd Pahl.

The Trouble with retail - online

The internet provides business with a whole raft of opportunities to broaden their business online: enhance provision of their goods and services, engage with customers and access new markets.  And as Australia inches towards the brave new world of the National Broadband Network, it's fair to say  that there will be a lot more business done online.

This is especially relevant to today's retailers, but it's not all good news.  Recently we've seen a campaign mounted by retail giants in Australia, bemoaning the fact that foreign retailers are getting into Australian consumers and selling them goods and services without the imposition of the Goods and Services Tax.   Retail gurus like Harvey-Norman co-founder Gerry Harvey claim that this is unfair to home-grown retailers.

But is all this protest in vain?  Is it possible to turn back the digital tide?  Is it a case of innovate or perish?  The tech-wreck of 2001 provided a painful lesson that many businesses learned from, while others stuck to their traditional way of doing things.

And so the struggle between old and new continues.  It's a tug-o-war that has many e-commerce observers, ABC technology commentator and author, Paul Wallbank explains.

15 - Reporters in PR

For the longest time, the ranks of public relations and public affairs practitioners were filled by former journalists. But more recently, since the spawning of new tertiary communications courses, PR and Public Affairs practitioners have come less and less from newsrooms and increasingly from universities.

But more recently still, we are beginning to witness a fusion of sorts occurring between two pathways - journalism and PR - possibly stimulated in part by the massive uptake of online engagement.   Our guest this week is the Federal Secretary of the Media Alliance and a trustee of the Walkley Foundation, Chris Warren.

14 - The Library of the Future

Throughout history, libraries have stood at the centre of a community and have played a crucial role as the storehouse of culture and learning.   These days, as billions of people around the world are increasingly using the internet to access literature, we may ask, what will be the role of the library of the future?  Will the big building in the centre of town become redundant, possibly replaced by an elaborate website?

Our guest is Noelle Nelson of the State Library of New South Wales.

13 - Who’s Who in the Online Zoo

How does a modern organisation with a complex mix of stakeholders and issues engage in a meaningful way with its stakeholders online?  The case in point this week is Sydney's world-famous Taronga Zoo.  You might think that as custodians of beautiful and rare animals, the zoo does not have any reputational issues but it most certainly does.

This week's guest is Taronga Zoo's Media Relations Manager.  The internet can make life easier but it can also present specific challenges.

12 - The new online marketing paradigm

Many business leaders, particularly those over 40, are aware of the bloggersphere, social media, online networks and suspect that they should start participating.  But they don't know why or how and some even have a resistent attitude against online engagement.

However there is little or no chance to opt out because in the 21st century, a new marketing paradigm is fast emerging in the online space.  Cutomers are already online generating traffic about goods and services and organisations who don't want to participate may need to get over it and plug in.  This week's  Reputation Online guest is the author of 'Marketing 2.0 Social Media Book' and the producer/presenter of the 'Find and Convert' podcast.  He's talking to Reputation Online host, Steve Cropper.
